A few years ago I wrote this semi-humourous, fully serious poem. I called it “Modern Old-Fashioned Love Poem” because it adopts the age-old, perhaps even stereotypical, stance of the poet extolling the virtues of his beloved and even uses some rhymes. But the language is not traditional and neither are a number of the sentiments.
One of my good friends, Guy Guitard, is a songwriter and musician. I shared the poem with him and he liked it. He said it sounded like the lyrics would make a good song. Some years later, he put it to music. It’s a first cut.

MODERN OLD-FASHIONED LOVE POEM
I will love you in the morning
I will love you in the night
I will love you when you’re loving
I will love you when you’re right.
I will love you without makeup
I will love you when you’re clean
I will love you when you’re dirty
I will love you when you’re mean.
I will love you when you’re young
I will love you when you’re old
I will love you in between and when
you’re hot and when you’re cold.
I will love you when you’re talking
I will love you when you’re dumb
I will love your bedtime stories
And I will always love your bum.
I will love you when I’m deaf
I will love you when I’m blind
And you will love me back
And you will love these silly rhymes.
